CONTRA COSTA PREMIERE! Director Maysaloun Hamoud and producer Shlomi Elkabetz (brother of the late actress Ronit Elkabetz) have created a heartfelt drama marked by sterling performances and astute observations. It sensitively captures the challenges faced by three 20-something Israeli Arab women living in cosmopolitan Tel Aviv who must balance tradition and modernity in their daily lives. Nour is a Muslim computer science student whose ultra-conservative fiancé doesn’t approve of her living with two non-traditional roommates. Laila is a sharp-edged lawyer who wears leather jackets, chain smokes and enjoys an easy camaraderie with her Jewish colleagues. Salma works as a DJ, fearful that her devout Christian parents will discover that she is gay. By the film’s conclusion, you’ll root for these three memorable women.
