It’s 1958 and one’s background matters. Rachel, an office worker, and Philippe, a bourgeois and worldly translator, enter into a passionate affair. When Rachel becomes pregnant, Philippe refuses marriage because his lover is outside his social class. This handsome melodrama follows their relationship over several decades. It is a love story between a man and a woman, and a mother and a daughter. At its core, it is also social commentary.
