One of our favorite films of the 2020 EBIJFF was The Tobacconist, a coming-of-age drama in which a naive young man from a small rural town is changed forever after he moves to Vienna in 1938 to learn a trade from a tobacconist. Soon, he will befriend Sigmund Freud, fall in love, confront anti-Semitism, and most importantly, refuse to be a bystander. A beautifully moving film graced by stirring performances.

Viewer Discretion Advised: Adult content, nudity and sexual scenes.

Sponsors: EBIJFF in partnership with the Contra Costa JCC, Cong. B’nai Shalom, Cong. Beth Emek, and Cong. B’nai Tikvah.

Note: One week later on Thursday, July 30 at 7:00 PM, award-winning author and historian Fred Rosenbaum spoke on the history and contemporary society of the Austrian Jewish community.
